The New York Yankees are off to a great start, but they haven’t seen much offensive production on the season. New York is averaging a reasonable 4.33 runs per game, but the team is hitting just .245 with a .707 OPS. Considering the names in this lineup, league-average production was not what the Yankees were expecting.
It’s not the fault of Juan Soto, who is hitting .417 with a homer and a 1.101 OPS to start the year. Anthony Volpe and Oswaldo Cabrera have also been hot. But Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo, Alex Verdugo, and Gleyber Torres are all hitting under .200 to start the year, something that came to a head in last night’s shutout loss.
The Yankees could be in for more offensive trouble tonight against Merrill Kelly. In his first start this year, Kelly game up just one run over 6.2 innings of work, and he’s coming off a solid season in 2023. It’s unlikely that this will be New York’s breakout game offensively.
The Arizona Diamondbacks have better offensive numbers, but a lot of that production came against the Colorado Rockies, who allowed 16 runs to Arizona on Opening Day. Things have cooled down a bit since then, with the Diamondbacks scoring just nine runs over their first two games against the Yankees.
Carlos Rodon looked better in his first start and should be able to keep Arizona from breaking this game open. The Yankees have yet to hit an Over this season, and today’s game doesn’t look like where it will happen. I’m taking the Under in this one.

Kelly is the better and more reliable pitcher in tonight’s matchup, especially with the struggles of the Yankees lineup, so Arizona should be able to win this game – or at least keep it close.
On that note, we’ll also take Kelly to hit the Over on his strikeouts prop. Kelly struck out eight batters in his last start, and averaged over six strikeouts per game last year.
