The PGA Championship Top Bets

Event: PGA Championship

Where: Oak Hill Country Club

Watch: ESPN, CBS

When: May 18-21

This third weekend in May brings the PGA Tour to its second major tournament of this season, the PGA Championship at venerable Oak Hill Country Club in upstate New York. A field of 156 that includes almost every big name in the game will tee it up for shares of $15 million in prize money, plus the Wanamaker Trophy and everlasting glory to the winner.

Last week Jason Day, our top betting pick at +1600, shot 62 on Sunday to win the Byron Nelson at TPC Craig Ranch in Texas. Austin Ekroat, a near-nobody out of Oklahoma State, and Si Woo Kim tied for second, one shot out of a playoff; CT Pan finished fourth; local hero Scottie Scheffler, Ty Hatton and Chinese golfer Zecheng Dou tied for fifth; and Aussie Adam Scott, Swede Vincent Norrman and Ryan Palmer tied for eighth.

We broke a long golf betting drought with Day last week and almost hit for more on a quinella prop at +3000; Day won but Scheffler tied for fifth, two shots out of second place.

As for this week the East Course at Oak Hill plays to a par-70 at around 7,160 yards. This PGA Championship will be the seventh Major to be played at Oak Hill. Most recently Jason Dufner won the PGA here back in 2013.

Scott Piercy and Adam Scott tied for fifth that year at Oak Hill while Day, Johnsons Dustin and Zach and Rory McIlroy tied for eighth.

The course then underwent extensive renovations in 2019, including the removal of many trees and the rebuilding of all 18 greens. So past performance records here won’t mean much.

Last year Justin Thomas outlasted Will Zalatoris in a playoff to win his second PGA Championship, this one at Southern Hills in Tulsa.

Each week we take a look at the golf betting sites and highlight what we believe to be some of the best golf betting values on the board, with a few free picks to click. Odds to win and pairings for this week can be found at Bovada. Here’s our take on some of the field in this week’s PGA Championship.

Jon Rahm, winner of the season’s first Major, the Masters a month ago, and Scheffler top the betting on Bovada’s PGA Championship board at +800. Rory McIlroy sits as the third choice at +1400, followed by two-time PGA champ Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele all at +1800.

Our top pick comes next.

Cameron Young +2500 to win

This upstate New York native is 12/12 on made cuts this season, with three top-10 finishes, including a T-10 at Bay Hill and a T-7 at the Masters. He also ranks No. 3 on the Tour in driving distance and No. 28 in putting. And he took a T-3 at the PGA Championship last year at Southern Hills. There’s a lot to like about this guy at these odds this week.

Keith Mitchell +1800 to finish top-five

Mitchell’s having a pretty good season, although the two times we’ve bet on him so far he’s come up empty. But we’ll try again. Mitchell owns four top-10 finishes this season, including a T-4 at Pebble Beach, a fifth at Riviera and a sixth (with Sungjae Im) at New Orleans last month. He also ranks No. 13 in driving distance, No. 27 in driving accuracy and No. 31 in putting. That’s a nice all-around game to take to a course like this.

Harris English +1400 to finish top-10

English struggled back in January-February but took a T-2 at Bay Hill in March and a T-3 at Quail Hollow a couple weeks ago. He’s also made the cut 16 times out of his last 17 Majors, with two top-four finishes in the US Open. We like the value at this price with this bet on this guy.

Elsewhere among Bovada’s PGA Championship bet offerings Adrian Meronk, who’s won three European Tour events over the last 10 months, is getting +1100 on the “top debutante” board; Rahm is getting +550 to miss the cut and +1800 to win by at least three shots; and the three-some of Rahm, Jordan Spieth and Max Homa is getting +2200 on the “all top-10” board.
