Reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova will face off against the talented Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva in the third round of the 2024 Madrid Open. The match will be played on Sunday, April 28, 2024. Here’s our Marketa Vondrousova vs Mirra Andreeva prediction.
Vondrousova downs Rogers
Marketa Vondrousova scored just her second-ever main draw win at the Madrid Open after beating American Shelby Rogers 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 18 minutes. The Czech lefty needed a response from a flat performance in the Stuttgart semifinal this past week, where she lost to Marta Kostyuk, and she got one here with a performance full of energy. She lost just six points behind her first serve and was seriously impressive in her return games. Vondrousova won 54% of points on return and broke Rogers on five occasions.
Andreeva authors another comeback win
Mirra Andreeva earned a second three-set win in as many days at the Madrid Open. After beating Taylor Townsend in her opener, the young Russian saw off Czech teenager Linda Noskova 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in almost two hours of play. Just 12 months ago, it was at this very tournament when Andreeva became the star of the show after reaching the fourth round on debut. She is looking to reprise that run but must beat a Grand Slam champion to get there on the eve of her 17th birthday.
Marketa Vondrousova vs Mirra Andreeva Head-To-Head
Vondrousova and Andreeva have not clashed on the WTA tour before this.
Marketa Vondrousova vs Mirra Andreeva Prediction
What a fascinating battle this promises to be. In as much as Andreeva is the youngest player in the draw and one of the rising stars on tour, Vondrousova is only 24 and has reached two Grand Slam finals already (she won the 2023 Wimbledon title), with her best tennis years surely ahead of her. The Czech is also an incredible force on clay and one of the fewest names with the tactical acumen to pull off every shot in the book on the dirt. Andreeva is more than capable of chasing every ball with youthful exuberance and energy, as she has shown in her young career. Still, Vondrousova’s variety should be the difference maker in this one.
