Augusta National
The Masters is played annually at hallowed Augusta National in Augusta, GA. One of the most famous courses in the World, Augusta is a 7,768-yard par-72, featuring Ryegrass fairways and Bentgrass greens.
The private course was established in 1933 and began hosting the Masters the following year. It also began hosting the National Women’s Amateur in 2019.
The payout
For the fourth straight year, the Masters paid out from an $11.5 million purse. The champion, Hideki Matsuyama, took home $2,070,000. Will Zalatoris pocketed $1,242,000 for his runner-up finish.
The coveted Green Jacket
Money isn’t the only thing that golfers play for at Augusta. There’s also the coveted Masters Green Jacket. This is a tradition that started in 1937 when all Augusta National members wore the jackets at the tournament to make them stand out from the public. It wasn’t until 1949 that the winners began receiving the Green Jacket — and the first one was awarded to Sam Snead.
