Community shocked 13-year-old would stab mother to death after getting phone taken away

WILKES-BARRE, Penn. (WOLF) – A community in Pennsylvania is in shock after police arrested a 13-year-old girl for allegedly stabbing her mom to death after getting her phone taken away.

Authorities said Lataya Powell is being charged as an adult with homicide.

Residents said they are disturbed to learn the teen could be involved in such a gruesome crime.

One neighbor said that he believes Powell and her family had only been living inside the home for about a month before the stabbing.

He said he’d seen the teen go to and from school a few times, but other than that he barely saw the family or heard anything out of the ordinary.

Officers with the Wilkes Barre City Police Department responded to a home in the area Friday around 12:30 p.m. and found Tamika Tucker with several stab wounds to her back and chest area.

Tucker was later pronounced dead at the Lutheran County Corner.

Media reports state a boy was also found lying on a couch in the living room with stab wounds to his back.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

The Times Leader said Powell told officers she was sorry as they approached her at the scene and admitted to killing her mother, explaining she had stabbed her during an argument.

She later told police she threw the knife she used in the attack on a neighbor’s doorstep.

The neighbor said she was home at the time, but in the backyard doing yard work at the time.

“I’m just thankful I wasn’t out here because you never know what could’ve happened, but I look at it that something good could come out of this and that she can get the help she needs. My prayers go out to the family and I’m sorry this happened,” the neighbor added.
