This version of the College Football Playoff slates the four highest-ranked teams against one another in semifinal matchups that occupy two of the New Year’s Six bowl games. This year, that’s the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl.
The CFP Selection Committee uses a magical combination of resume, conference champion status, strength of schedule, head-to-head matchups, and more to determine those four teams.
Controversially, undefeated ACC champ Florida State (13-0) was left out due in large part to the injury of star quarterback Jordan Travis and how they played without him, making the Seminoles the first undefeated Power Five conference champ to miss this version of the CFP.
With that said, this is all set to change. The CFP is moving to a much more elaborate 12-team playoff starting in 2024.
