McLaren has confirmed that Sam Bird has been withdrawn from the Monaco E-Prix and replaced by reserve driver Taylor Barnard, who will make his competitive debut.

Bird has been ruled out following a nasty accident at Sainte Devote in free practice one, where a collision with the barrier resulted in his steering wheel snapping on him.

Similar incidents have led to broken wrists, with Bird having immediately grabbed his after jumping out of the car.

The Woking-based team released a statement confirming Bird’s withdrawal, which read: “The NEOM McLaren Formula E Team can confirm that Sam Bird will not be participating for the remainder of the Monaco E-Prix.

“Following his on-track incident, there are signs of a potential hand injury, which needs to be further medical attention.

“Sam will be going to the hospital for an x-ray to help clarify the nature of the injury. As a result, and pending approval by the FIA, Taylor Barnard will be stepping in for Sam for the remainder of the event, driving the #8 car for the NEOM McLaren Formula E Team.

“The team are already preparing the #8 car ready in time for FP2 following the damage. Further updates will be provided via the team when these become available.”

A couple of hours after the incident, McLaren confirmed that Bird had broken a bone in his hand and would require further treatment.
